The history of Farmac Timber & Building Supplies

Farmac Building Supplies opened it’s doors on 20th November 1972 with Kenneth Farrally and his business partner Reg McKay at it’s helm in a little yard on Smalewell Road in Pudsey. They had both worked together at C.P.Murray, a builders merchants based on Sovereign Street in Leeds. Ken ran the yard and Reg worked as a sales rep, but they decided to have a go for themselves. The company name is derived from their surnames, Farally & Mackay, FAR-MAC.

The business grew and In April 1976 they moved to larger premises on Roker Lane in Pudsey. The building was an old Primitive Methodist Chapel originally opened in 1876. It was used as a fire station during the war and as a warehouse for Permenite Roof Felt before Ken and Reg moved in.

In January 1978 Farmac invested in their first brand new delivery truck and in July the same year, Ken’s son Paul joined the company. March 1979 saw Farmac become a limited company. Around the same time Reg left the business but his name lives on!

On 25th January 1986 the building and contents went up in flames almost ending the Farmac story but  Ken and Paul persevered and managed to get the necessary repairs done, restocked and in May of the same year re-opened the gates.

The 1st September 1998 is where our family, the Beverley’s come in. Our company Pudsey Hardware Merchants Ltd which already ran a large DIY shop in Pudsey bought Farmac Building Supplies from Ken and Paul. The builders merchants was a natural addition to our company.

At first Simon Beverley ran the builders merchants with one member of staff, Mick Paine who stayed with us until retirement in 2016. James continued to run the shops until we sold them in 2004 when he came to join Farmac.

With a great team and plenty of stock the business began to grow rapidly and we soon outgrew our yard on Roker Lane. If it hadn’t been for the recession of 2008 we would have moved out to a large yard on Waterloo Road in Pudsey but the banks put pay to that!

After various attempts to move to a bigger yard we finally found a site that would allow us to expand on Grangefield Industrial Estate in Pudsey. We gutted our new site, refitted the trade counter and re concreted the broken yard. We now have 1.5 acres of clean, tidy and well stocked yard allowing us to look after our customer properly and efficiently. We are also very close to the ring road giving us easy access to the motorways and so all of West Yorkshire.

Over the last 20 years Farmac has grown into the reputable, reliable, knowledgeable and well stocked merchant that it is today. We pride ourselves on having everything under one roof and being able to deliver it fast, and at the right price.

Farmac has had an very interesting 40 years and here’s to the next 40!
